| Weeki Wachee Springs Cave Exploration Project |
|
We are excited to be a sponsor of Karst Underwater Research, documenting the ongoing cave exploration at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Hernando County near Tampa FL. It's one of the most unique caves we have ever had the opportunity of shooting HD video and exploring. Weeki Wachee is now the deepest underwater cave in the United States at over 400feet deep and presents many technical difficulties for shooting. It's one of our most challenging experiences to date due to the depth and difficulty of entering the system.
We have been participating for the past few months as exploration and mission dives are completed. Weeki Wachee is over 400 feet deep in sections and averages around 265 ffw. Explorers have laid over 6,700 feet of line and found unique, never seen before formations deep inside the system. In the next few months the team will collect speleotherm samples, water samples, and will make radio locates to varify underwater survey along with hopefully connecting Weeki Wachee to Twin Dee's cave system nearby. Dave successfully completed a Radio locate on 4-18-09 around 800 feet back in the cave at a depth of 260 feet!
Liquid Productions, LLC shot linear HD video inside Weeki Wachee on 5-2-09. It took over 13 experienced, dedicated divers to set up this dive and bring 4 Silent Submersion DPV's, 2 Death Ray 200 watt HMI lights, our 2 HD video cameras, dual Salvo 50 watt HID's, along with extra tanks and equipment into the system at 190 feet through the ever challanging crack enterance and high flow. Video was shot to 2000 feet in an area called Helm's Deep, a large room you could probably fit a foot ball stadium inside. Shots include formations on the walls, and on the floor, a Radio locate being picked up and reset for a crew on the surface to locate, along with video of the River tunnel that has never been seen or photographed before! A depth of 270 feet and a total dive time of over 6 hours to complete this dive safely. A clean up crew went back into the cave while divers were doing decompression to remove over 100,000 dollars worth of equipment safely! We are excited to be able to document a cave with ongoing exploration efforts and hope to set up another video dive in the upcoming weeks.
We along with Karst Underwater Research were proud to present the Weeki Wachee springs exploration project video at DEMA, the Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) workshop and National Association of Cave Diving (NACD) workshops this fall! We are hoping that the window of opportunity opens for us in 2010 to be able to collect more video and do more exploration.
